GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Conservation Education Coordinator in Cheyenne, WY. This position will advance the Wyoming Game & Fish Department's mission of conserving wildlife and serving people by offering quality statewide conservation education programs and exploring new program ideas for engaging people about the importance of wildlife, increasing awareness about wildlife and the work of the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, and increasing participation in hunting, fishing, and wildlife enjoyment. This position coordinates statewide wildlife education programs and supports regional efforts while helping to implement Game and Fish's outreach plan by working closely with other members of the Communications and Outreach team. This position also coordinates and facilitates agency camps for families, women, and youth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Generate excitement and interest about wildlife, fish, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
  • Plan and facilitate agency camps for youth, women, and families.
  • Increase participation and awareness of conservation and outdoor activities.
  • Increase educational offerings and provide resources to increase effectiveness and ease of outreach to youth.
  • Evaluate, coordinate, and implement comprehensive statewide wildlife conservation programs for Game and Fish.
  • Organize, plan and implement educational events and programs at the statewide level and at the Game and Fish Department's Conservation Camp or at other facilities. 
  • Coordinate with partners to benefit all conservation education efforts in the state. Provide high-quality service to Game and Fish's customers and other members of the public.
  • Develop an annual work plan and budget to address agency priorities.
  • Oversee, recruit and foster volunteers and volunteer programs for conservation education.
  • Conduct workshops in the areas of exploring the outdoors, aquatics, wildlife conservation, first aid and survival, observation, hunter education, and outdoor recreation.
  • Oversee program inventory, maintaining program supplies, equipment, and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference will be given to those with a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Natural Resources, Biology, Wildlife/Fisheries Management, Education, Environmental Education, Outdoor Recreation, or closely related field.
Preference will be given to those with 3-5 years of working experience. 
Preference will be given to those with Hunter safety certification.
Preference will be given to those with Teaching certification.

**Must have a valid driver's license. 


KNOWLEDGE: 


  •  Familiarity and knowledge about Wyoming's wildlife, the principles of wildlife conservation, and the North American model of wildlife conservation.
  • Knowledge of science related to aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and habitat.
  • Experience and knowledge about the principles and methods of planning and conducting education programs, specifically conservation education.
  • Knowledge, skill, and experience designing educational programs.
  • Experience with outdoor recreation skills and the ability to teach those to others.
  • Experience and skills running camps and programs for youth and other audiences.
  • Knowledge and skill in communicating complex scientific information to a general audience.
  • Must have computer skills in word processing, data entry, and spreadsheets. Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience working with school districts and teachers. 
  • Experience planning and coordinating camps or other similar programming would be a plus.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education:
Bachelor's Degree

 
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience with acquired knowledge at the level of a Public Relations Specialist II
 
OR

 
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience with acquired knowledge at the level of a Public Relations Specialist II

None

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, on uneven terrain for extended periods of outdoor work, must be able to lift 40 lbs., and be able to work overnight some nights and weekends.
  • Will include the occasional use and/or transfer of firearms and munitions and the supervision of others using firearms for use in the Hunter Education and/or Outdoor Skills Education classes/workshops/seminars. Statewide travel is required.
  • This position is based in Cheyenne.
