The Enterprise Assurance Strategic Capabilities Unit delivers critical assurance disciplines that protect and enable people, data and missions. The Ball Aerospace Internship Program is a 10-week summer program that provides interns with practical experience working on relevant projects while working with designated mentors; access to state-of-the-art equipment; a competitive wage; relocation reimbursement; in-house training; group activities; possible future employment and the ability to participate in the Ball Aerospace Remote Sensing Team (BIRST) program to build and launch a rocket or high-altitude balloon. At the conclusion of your internship, you will be required to prepare and deliver a formal presentation of your project work to your respective department.

 

Technical Intern – Space Vehicle Security Engineer

The Space Vehicle Security Engineering Technical Internship will enable the candidate to perform the Systems Security Engineering (SSE) required to establish the basis for the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems and / or hardware and / or software-based assurance solutions for protection of critical mission technology.  This person will gain SSE experience to support major acquisition programs.  Ideal experience would be knowledge and / or experience with Space Defense Agency (SDA) guidelines, policies, and laws.  This rising Subject Matter Expert (SME) will identify SSE systems and hardware / software assurance and program protection risks and mitigating strategies in support of systems and hardware / software assurance to the protect the United States of America’s most advanced technologies.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Under the general supervision of and mentoring by multiple Senior-Level Mission Systems Assurance (MSA) Systems Security Engineers (SSE), gain familiarity with cyber security requirements that enable technical Architects / Systems Engineers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) the ability to secure hardware and software products.
  • Under the general supervision of a Senior-Level SSE, gain familiarity of a variety of work products [e.g., SSE Plan, Threat Countermeasure Tree Analysis., etc.] utilized in the SSE discipline.
  • Be mentored by Mission Assurance (MA) Leadership, MSA Leadership, and SSEs to understand the role and possible future employment opportunities.
  • Interface with a variety of Engineering disciplines and programs across the Ball Aerospace enterprise as you perform your role and understand possible future employment opportunities.
  • Learn how to derive Systems Engineering Requirements from Security Requirements and Controls.
  • Learn and understand how to maintain a comprehensive and holistic Systems Security Engineering (SSE) view while addressing stakeholder security risks and concerns through the application of Systems Engineering skills.
  • Assist in building a culture of security that implements security from the beginning of a program’s development and supports the implementation of security by default.
  • Learn how to ensure the effectiveness and suitability of the security elements within the systems as an enabler to Mission Success.
  • Support other tasks and areas of subject matter expertise, to include the Trusted & Assured Microelectronics (T&AM) program, Anti-Tamper, and Software Security Assurance, with Design Engineering subject matter expertise as required.
  • Engineer efficiencies with ownership of a Continual Improvement project having defined milestones, with high MSA and Enterprise Assurance visibility.
  • Possible opportunity for Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) project, tool experience dependent.
  • Possible opportunity for Hardware Security Engineering project, based upon undergraduate coursework and experience (i.e. Electrical Engineering academic degree program).
  • Understand the role SSE plays in the overall Program Lifecycle within Ball Aerospace, as well as the Engineering interfaces.
  • Understand the role MSA plays in the overall Program Lifecycle within Ball Aerospace.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

 

What You’ll Need:

  • Must have completed your sophomore or junior year and be enrolled in a degree program for the fall of 2024. We will also accept students enrolled in a graduate degree program.
  • Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Pursuing a degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering (Cyber Security focus), or Embedded Software Engineering.
  • Master of Science (M.S.) Degrees in Cybersecurity (Engineering) are welcome to apply and will be considered if they’ve completed a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in one of the above Engineering disciplines / curricula.
  • Have track records of highly collaborative working skills in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentations skills, and ability to lead group discussions.
  • In addition to the typical educational and experience requirements, the successful candidate must possess a demonstrated capability to adequately perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position and to exhibit the skills and competencies required to fulfill the workflow.
  • Solid analytic capabilities and organizational skills.
  • Ability to document analysis results and write reports.
  • Ability to efficiently learn new subjects / techniques / software, without, necessarily, the assistance of others.
  • Ability to contribute to the success of small teams through excellent teamwork.
  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience preferred.
  • Experience in the Systems Security Engineering (SSE) discipline preferred.
  • Experience in the field of Cybersecurity is desired.
  • Basic understanding of firmware, software, and programmable logic devices (ASIC, FPGA, gateware) preferred.
  • Previous experience developing threat (vector) analysis preferred.
  • Department of Defense (DoD) / Intelligence Community (IC) experience – basic understanding of how engineering and security work within the DoD / IC preferred.

 

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $20.20 - $28.75 per hour (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
