Safety Risk Consultant (Associate Level)

ERM

ERM is seeking a Safety & Risk Consultant, with hands-on experience in mining, power, chemical or oil & gas sectors. This role can be based in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans or Baton Rouge. The ideal candidate will bring solid technical risk skills and an understanding of business processes to help our clients proactively address their EHS risks and challenges.

As a consultant, you will support clients in identifying critical controls and implement management plans to reduce their exposure to risk. You will also take part in compliance audit and risk focus audits. In addition, you will support EHS-related needs in our office and at our client sites locally, nationally, and potentially internationally. You will be supported, trained and mentored by your team members throughout your career, and be part of ERM’s global network of sustainability professionals.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Scribe and Facilitate risk workshops (i.e., HAZID, What-if. HAZOP, Bowties, LOPA).
  • Provide technical expertise to safety and risk projects involving risk analysis, modeling, calculations, and other studies.
  • Conduct Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA).
  • Develop critical control management plans.
  • Audit and prepare recommendations on Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Participate in Safety Culture Diagnostic and Implementation of Improvement Measures.
  • Participate in Safety Leadership Training.
  • Conduct training, field coaching, and assessment for safety performance improvement projects.
  • Provide technical assistance on EHS-related compliance projects, management system development and implementation, and EHS auditing.
  • Develop EHS procedures, plans, and reports to support our clients' management systems and permitting processes.
  • Provide EHS regulatory and best practices advisory services.
  • Assess regulatory compliance across various safety and environmental programs.
  • Determine regulatory applicability and document rationale based on specific site conditions and operations.
  • Perform compliance audits and implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations.
  • Support mergers and acquisitions due diligence projects that incorporate EHS components.
  • Communicate with clients, technical resources, and team members to control budget, schedule and scope.
  • Manage multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Prepare technical proposals and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience, with emphasis in mining, power, oil & gas, or chemical sectors.
  • 1 year of experience is equivalent to 2 years of education.
  • Strong interest in sustainability issues and motivation for continued learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish client relationships.
  • Ability to work independently, while collaborating with a team, to accomplish complex tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret federal and local EHS legislation and regulations.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills as well as experience with writing comprehensive technical reports.
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, and travel with minimal supervision.

 

Accountabilities

  • Accountable for meeting personal billability and related targets.
  • Providing leadership to achieve health and safety excellence, including developing ERM and subcontractor understanding of ERM’ s commitment to safe working and the importance of adherence to ERM’s and Client safety management requirements.
  • Leading the task team and building its reputation within ERM in terms of delivering exceptional performance.

  • Zero Loss of Time Injuries (LTIs) and visible and demonstrable safety leadership as measured by engagement with ECS and the Active Leadership Audit program.                    
  • Completion of tasks within project budget and time requirements.                                       
  • Identification of efficiencies in carrying out deliverable related tasks
  • Client satisfaction through project communications & engagement, quality of outputs produced to deliver client service excellence.                                                                               
  • Future sales through identification of possible change orders and new opportunities
  • Project risk should be minimized by compliance with the project plan, PIC sign off of deliverables and the ERM risk management process.

 

Task Leadership

  • Health and wellbeing of team members.
  • Profitability of the project through managing the efficient completion of activities, changes or possible changes to scope, time, budget recommendations.
  • Project/task risks (Commercial and Operational) are managed.

  • Works under supervision and in line with standard working practices, procedures and specific instructions.
  • Works with colleagues to inform decision making and contributing to effective delivery of projects in line with agreed methodologies, procedures, working practices and project priorities.
